About Portland

Located in the far south west corner of the Victorian Coast on the Great Ocean Road, Portland boasts more than 200 heritage buildings from the 1800’s, all lovingly restored, and vast stretches of coastline provide excellent fishing, surfing, diving and swimming.  Portland offers visitors a wealth of opportunities to explore rugged landscapes, discover a colourful history, get back to nature, surf some great waves, hoist a sail in a brisk wind, catch a fish, wander historic streets, dine on great food, or just relax and enjoy.

Portland's latest attraction is the Maritime Discovery Centre, on the foreshore. Here the maritime history of the region unfolds in a fascinating, sight and sound-filled exhibition within a building representing the hulls of ships linked by a central pier. Other popular destinations in the Portland area include Bridgewater Bay with its resident  seal colony, Discovery Bay and Cape Nelson Lighthouse.

Industry in the region includes Portland Aluminium, fishing, fertiliser, wool-stores, and  Portland’s deep-water port.

IGA and Safeway are the 2 main supermarkets in Portland. Please note that the opening hours are typically more restricted than those in the city, and in most towns the typical opening hours are from 7am-10pm daily.
The Portland Angling Club Market is held on the 3rd Sunday of every month on the foreshore off Bentinck St from 8am-2pm. The Portland Wischmans is also held on the 2nd and last Sunday of every month in Gorae Rd from 9am-3pm.
